Thanks Hans.

We look good on all the items you listed except 3) . We have public and VIP interfaces resolved in the hosts files. Should we have them to be resolved from DNS as well?

A few things I have found in the past, which may or may not be related:

  1. root.sh must never be run on box 2 until it has completely finished on box 1
  2. networking must be 100% consistent: eg: eth0 always public, eth1 always private   - if eth1 is public on one, and eth0 is public on other, blotto
  3. public and all VIPs resolved consistently - listed on DNS or in ALL /etc/hosts
  4. all userids must have no-password remote logins
  5. SSH must NOT have a 'You are in breach if you login' message
