Satvik,
Take a look at MOS bug 5956646: REAL TIME APPLY CAN LEAVE STANDBY IN UNRECOVERABLE STATE IF STANDBY NODE CRASHES Even though it is unlikely you run into that bug, it is important to understand the architectural limitation. Enabling flashback on the standby should resolve bug 5956646. Real time apply is recommended in general, but it is optional if you are okay with longer unplanned dataguard failover time.

Thanks,

What is your standby DB going to be used for...Reporting? Failover? It is important to you that transactions are applied as quickly as possible to the standby? I had one doubt regarding real time apply feature in 10.2 Using Real-Time Apply to Apply Redo Data in a physical standby in 10.2 has the following benefits according to the oracle 10.2 dataguard documentation. "If the real-time apply feature is enabled, log apply services can apply redo data as it is received, without waiting for the current standby redo log file to be archived. This results in faster switchover and failover times because the standby redo log files have been applied already to the standby database by the time the failover or switchover begins." are there any advantages other than the above to enable the real time apply feature in 10.2 for a physical standby. what is the recommended way (enable or disable real time apply) and why is that so? Please advise. Regards, Satvik
