Client connections intermittently lost

  We’re seeing requests (can be any, but we’re seeing it from the “select 1 from dual” jdbc validation request as well as from the application). It appears the initial requests goes out and then it’s followed by retransmits with increasingly amount of delay between retransmits (maxes out at 2 minutes) for a total of 15 minutes (about 16 retransmits total). Then it looks like there is a reset and the request goes through creating a new tcp connection and username/password are sent and the connection is established and the request finished.

The Oracle side is a set of six databases spread across a 6 node pure 11.2.0.3 (4 databases) and the other two databases are in a 3 node pure 10.2.0.5 RAC. Both are on RHEL 5.6

I am at a loss as to even where to begin. We're talking to the tomcat guys to find out exactly what the configurations mean, but honestly I don't understand what this could be.
