Archive Retention settings Grid Control

When setting the Backup Policy settings for Archived Redo Log Deletion, you can choose NONE or Delete after specified number of backups. From what I can see, the second option is not RMAN backups, but backups to a tape or other such device? I set it to 2 and noticed that no archive logs get deleted after several days of RMAN full backups ( my retention policy is set for 3 days). I have logs back to the 14th still.
