*Multiple* file servers, co-located with the users (particularly when they are in different buildings/locations) are recommended.

Else :
a. The file server is a SPOF.
b. Network latency might be visible when loading DLLs.

We put our clients on a file server and push only the registry and path changes to the clients.
So, an upgrade means:
Delete ORACLE entry from the registry and the path. Insert the new registry.
Insert the new path.

Maybe you should consider changing to this method while you upgrade.
