So they asked you to update the parameter in SPFILE, did they specify a restart for it to take effect?

The equivalent to SCOPE=SPFILE is just edit your pfile to include the setting.

If you need it take effect immediately then SCOPE=MEMORY. Don't forget to manually add it to your PFILE if you need it in effect after next restart.
