Regarding the -1, another inconvenient value returned by some shells is "unlimited" and from time to time over the years that has made things choke. Sometimes resetting the limit to actual memory works, unless you're on a vintage that functions unusably beyond all recognition (fubars) with some 32-bit or signed math where it meant unsigned math. Seeing what the command querying shmmax in the context of your defaults being run by the installer returns (as opposed to looking directly at what number it has actually been set to) may yield a useful clue about whether you need to fix some .profile or the like that picks up a shell default that is unfriendly to oracle installs.

I believe that that is the default setting on that distribution (though I don't have one to check). Your setting corresponds to unlimited which is generally indicated by a -1 setting. I suspect that that is what is throwing the installer.

I have been stuck not being able to run the GUI installer because the machine is so remote from me, it never displays back to my X server, so I started going through the pre-reqs using cluvfy to help, when I came across the fact that shmmax is set to 18446744073709551615.
Now I am used to not changing a configuration if the setting is greater than Oracle needs, but cluvfy objects to this setting and I was taken aback by a value that is (2^64)-1.
I am trying to get all of the pre-reqs I can sorted so that I get an easier ride when I try to use the installer with a response file in silent mode.
What experience do others on the list have, who have used Suse, with this setting of shmmax , have you always changed it or left it as is?
