I think every, and I do mean every, Java developer should be required to manage a large Oracle database for about 6 months (say > 1TB) and then be required to develop a like database in noSQL and let's see what they think.

You are joking right?
nosql and alikes have a future for sure. In their own niche, that is.

There has been a discussion on oo databases in the past few weeks. My 2 eurocent is that they are limiting the way you can access data, meaning that other applications and reports (don't forget about the reporting) will be difficult to attach to this database.

hey, I want to get paid 500$ a day... where do I sign up? is that for consulting
or for regular dba job? I can code pretty decent pl/sql as well :-P

anyway, slightly moving this farther off topic, does anyone here know anything
about object oriented databases? I'm interesting in Gemstone in particular. What
are they, what are the differences and what are they used for? How do they store
data? what are the differences with multidimensional databases?

I had a java developer who hates rdbms telling me that RDBMS were dead (what a
surprise) and that the future of persitence was in nosql and that nonsense.

cheers
