Subject: Client determination

What is the quickest way to determine what version of a client is installed on a given machine? Is starting SQLPLUS the only method?

I have to verify client versions to ensure connectivity to a new 11gR2 database. Clients are 9.2, but not sure if they are 9.2.0.8

Trolling MOS while awaiting a response.
