Niall,

Exadata patching is two step process. The storage server upgrades are installed in the new drives and booted from the new drives. That is the reason they don't support installing any other software in the storage server boxes.

DB servers are similar to regular DB servers, with some additional steps. You are right on the out of place upgrades new patches..
