A few folks have made use of the password server in "Perl for Oracle DBAs" http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596002107  <http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596002107> Toolkit: http://oreilly.com/catalog/oracleperl/pdbatoolkit/

There's a version available that isn't on the O'Reilly site that allows the entire password 'database' file to be encrypted should anyone be interested - and it always encrypted data over the network.
