archive_lag_target specifies the number of seconds to do automatic log switch. e.g. setting to 600 will do a log switch every 10 minutes. We use this parameter on almost all of our dataguard clients. Obviously if there is heavy redo generation, log switches will be more frequent, but archive_lag_target specifies the maximum amount of time between switches.
