Since we're on the topic, I could also use a little help. Here is the job description. The position is located in Milwaukee, WI for a large company.
  • Works independently with only administrative supervision. Receives instructions from senior Database Systems staff as well as gives instructions to others in order to move projects to successful conclusions. Overcomes major obstacles while communicating problem areas to others.
  • Provides written status reports as well as verbal, that are detailed to the tasks and difficulties encountered personally or observed for others, so managers understand the state of projects as well as any critical areas that may need additional focus.
  • Maintains service commitments, is responsive and exercises customer service at all times with internal and external clients.
  • Assists Application groups with the development of designs that meet current and future business requirements:
  • Participates and directs the logical design process of strategic projects.
  • Participates in overall business and application definitions.
  • Consults on the development of complex database designs.
  • Provides maintenance of the physical database.
  • Creates physical database objects following established standards and processes employed by the Database team.
  • Schedules regular database reorganizations and manages space allocations as necessary to maintain adequate performance/Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) usage.
  • Works with capacity planning, operations, application developers and DASD on database performance and access issues, not limited to those databases for which they are assigned as a primary DBA.
  • Completes database patching and upgrades while providing guidance to less senior members of the Database team who assist.
  • Applies database concepts such as database definitions, sizing parameters, database component placement, reorganization, access methods and security definitions. Works to continually improve the use of these concepts in the database environment providing feedback that supports and improves standards that have been set for the Database team.
  • Performs routine reviews of databases and systems to ensure acceptable levels of performance. Advises others in their efforts, this function is not limited to those databases for which they are assigned as a primary DBA.
  • Develops, documents and implements; standards, guidelines, direction and education on database process/procedures for Application teams as well as Database staff.
  • Enforces database standards and follows up on inconsistencies.
  • Provides 24 by 7 support of production database environment, participates in the on call schedule and as needed for on call issues with database environments for which they are directly responsible (I.E. Primary DBA).
  • Provides follow up and permanent resolution for reoccurring issues.
  • Recommends and assists in the selection, evaluation and implementation of software tools to assist in maintaining the database environment.
  • Participates as a member of the development support team on projects. Follows and meets project timelines and deadlines.
  • Participates in disaster recovery testing and documentation.
  • Strives to meet the Operational Level Agreements with other groups within Metavante.
  • Develops a working knowledge of the applications supported and the Database Management System (DBMS) the application is using.
  • Assigned to the most highly visible, sensitive and critical systems.
  • Performs other related duties assigned as needed EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent.
  • Minimum of eight years experience in database management and support or applications programming and design is required. Demonstrated competency of the Database Analyst II role is required.
  • Experience in project management methodologies is required.
  • Displays independent judgment that is well thought out.
  • Requires effective communication with all levels of technical and non-technical personnel. Needs to understand the interface points of internal departments.
  • Very effective communication, team building, coaching and persuasive skills. Provides information to a variety of audiences and deals effectively with issues that are complex, confidential and sensitive in nature. Ability to negotiate complex processes and issues with others.
  • Advanced PC Skills and advanced knowledge of operating systems/systems administration concepts.
  • Must make a personal commitment to stay current with technology.
  • Knowledgeable of several of the DBMS systems currently in use at Metavante. Excellent problem solving, analytical and critical thinking skills. Identifies and resolves complex problems and situations using applicable theories/principals while providing creative solutions.
