I hope this message did not come across the wrong way.

The point I was trying to make is simply this:

You cannot be successful as a DBA unless you have a good understanding of backup and recovery, especially recovery.

Doing so will require hands on testing, and messing up a few test databases along the way when you 'learn' something new. :)
