Streams apply tags from triggers

Does anyone know how to set the apply_tag for DML changes made from a trigger? I have a Streams setup that requires the apply tags to be null in order to replicate data between two databases which is working without any problems. However, when records are inserted into a table from a trigger being fired the changes aren't being captured. I suspect this is because the apply tag is being set in this situation so my capture process is ignoring it.
