I'm unable to find the exact bug (work with Oracle Support if you really want it) but my suggestion would be this: Upgrade to 11.1.0.7 and then apply patch 8318020 for dbms_stats. There is a significant number of fixes in 11.1.0.7 and it has been a pretty stable release IMHO and it fixes quite a number of bugs found in 11.1.0.6.
