Optimizer Stats collection for Datawarehouses

Does anybody has any best practices followed for Database stats in 9i /10g ? Any suggestion or point that can be used like storing stats or adding monitoring clause or so that it can help in automating/writing some procedure to optimize it. One example is that if there monthly partition table containing several Gig data and when new partition created and utiliZed can experience some performance slowness on the first day of the month. and so TIA Sanjay
