Hi Eugene,

I'm not really a fan of up2date when it comes to upgrading let's say OEL4.4 to 4.7, what I would do...

  • stage the 4.7
  • update the kernel
  • create a yum repository
  • update the OS from 4.4 to 4.7

I've posted the details here...
http://karlarao.wordpress.com/2009/04/04/single-instance-and-rac-kernel-os-upgrade/

But I've encountered before, when a machine was about to be deployed on a customer site (Oracle already installed) and the security team did a "security risk assessment".. found out that some packages are not on the version that they require, well an OS update was already done (let's say already on 4.7) and they want some packages to be on the most recent version. They don't want to put internet connection on the machine so I can't use up2date.. & they don't have a RedHat Satellite deployed on their shop. So I pulled the new versions of the packages on the RHN and installed them on the server. The security team was happy, and the server was ready for deployment.

And, BTW, when updating let's say OEL4 to OEL5 or RHEL4 to 5. I would recommend a fresh install.
