The patch set readme states in section "7 System Requirements" that the Oracle Home has to be 10.2.0.1 or higher so: yes, it's possible. I am migrating to 10.2.0.4 on Linux this weekend and we installed 10.2.0.1 and patched it to 10.2.0.4. There is a patch set update 10.2.0.4.2 out which-depending on your setup-you might be interested in (patch 8833280)

Me, but I assume it's standard practice for everyone (I have actually worked in a place where they applied 10.2.0.1, 10.2.0.3 and then 10.2.0.4)
