A very subjective statement that many sales people like to toss around. Some years ago a former colleague was asked to do a cost assessment on the three major database players, Oracle, DB2, and Sql*Server. Took him 3 months to accumulate and compile the data into something that was understandable and even handed. But in the end he found that the total cost of ownership of products was a wash. The difference that the sales droids like to play to is the initial purchase cost. Then come the add-ons and other assorted sundry items that make the system truly usable and manageable. His basic point was that although IBM & Microslop nickel & dime you into submission, Oracle just hit you over the head with a baseball bat from the get go.
