Actually, it's VxFS.
The server is a previously "inactive" node of a Vertias Cluster - on HP-UX 11.23, not ServiceGuard.
The standard here is to use VxFS and VCS for all servers.

I guess you're on JFS2 then? JFS2 is rebrandede VxFS, which doesn't have concurrent IO unless you use QuickIO (which you want to avoid) or Oracle ODM library, which should be ok.

From a read/write performance perspective, would it be better to use smallfile tablespaces with multiple uniform datafiles?

Any helpful information would be much appreciate down here in the rabbit hole.  :-)
