I'm pretty sure they changed that in 9i+ so that when you run "delete expired" it actually deletes them from the catalog rather than just marking them as deleted. I'll have to look up the documentation to confirm unless anyone else happens to have it on hand.

When you run the crosscheck command the backup file will take on a status of expired. This will continue forever until you then run the delete expired command. This will mark expired backup sets as deleted
