I posted the answer I found on my Blog if anyone is interested. The merge command is really quite powerful and I think way underused.

Also, I've started a contest based on this thread and using the merge command to see if you can find an answer to an even more complex problem when it comes to the merge command. The winner gets a copy of my new 11g RMAN book when it comes out!
