This seems to work best if you have lots of disk for your backup staging (FRA) area - in my testing with 11.1.0.6 EE it created an (compressed) L0 copy, an L1 copy *and* a complete uncompressed image, which surprised me .  ie if the database is size n you need at least 2n of backup disk all the time...
So it's workable only if you have disk to burn, and plan accordingly. cheers-
