And it takes precedence over the ORACLE_SID setting too! Hence my favourite take on the database in $PS1:

   ${TWO_TASK:+T:}${TWO_TASK:-"${ORACLE_SID:+S:}${ORACLE_SID:-NONE}"}  That way I know also which of the two is in force.
