In a worse case situation if you have the backup set pieces, you can always use PL/SQL to restore RMAN backups without a RC or a control file. I just had to do this a couple of months ago for a client who was running Oracle 8 (!i)! It's a painful process, but it works.

Some MML/SBT tape software makes it *very* difficult to get backup set pieces off of the backup media manually too. Sometimes a quick call to dbms_backup_restore does the trick. (ok... the call isn't that quick, but it's not to complex).

Cheers!

The LDS Church is looking for DBA's. You do have to be a Church member in
good standing. A lot of kind people write me, concerned I may be breaking
the law by saying you have to be a Church member. It's legal I promise! :-)

You should be able to restore 7yr old backups w/o a recovery catalog as well – just as long as you have old backups of your controlfile set with proper retention.

if you need to be able to restore a database to any point in time in the last 7 years the recovery catalog is priceless.
