I have mentioned OEM just in case :)

However I was informed that Oracle does not formally support tar-based installations.

This metalink document tells more on the issue:

Subject: FAQs on RDBMS Oracle Home Cloning Using OUI  Doc ID: 565009.1

...
What is the difference between cloning and copying an Oracle Home ? Cloning re-plays all the actions that were performed during the installation of the Oracle Home like relinking, updating the inventory, etc., and hence the cloned home can be patched using OPatch, patchsets can be installed to it, etc., other than extracting files from the software kit.
By copying the Oracle Home from one server to another, all the above mentioned actions are not performed and also it is not possible to apply patches or patchsets to copied Oracle Home. Simply copying the Oracle Home is not supported. If the Oracle Home has to be deployed to multiple destinations with the same configuration, cloning is the only supported method. ....

Bear in mind that using OEM to do this requires a license for provisioning pack _at_ ~$3500 per processor (I don't remember the exact price off the top of my head).

Thanks,
Matt

tar works well.

If you want more then you can try Oracle Home cloning scripts or OEM GUI clone stuff.

I suppose you could write a quick shell script for the whole shebang. Silent installs are *much* faster than the GUI to. Just script the installer silent with a canned response file, then call opatch to apply the patches in the proper order. It may not be a ton faster, but certainly much less labor intensive.

I have not find any "fast" way, I just follow the patch (or patch set) installation instruction when applying patch (or patch set) on each machine.Guang

We are on Oracle 10gr2 10.2.0.4 with few patches and sometimes we have to install these on multiple machines.

What do folks use for quick Oracle installation? Is it runInstaller with multiple steps of upgrades and patches *or* is there a faster way?
