RMAN problems

Oracle 10.2.0.3
AIX 6
EMC Networker 4.5
We are trying to back up one of our databases to tape and we keep getting this error

RMAN-03009: failure of backup command on c2 channel at 02/27/2009

ORA-19511: Error received from media manager layer, error text:
The NMO error message has been lost. Please set NSR_DEBUG_FILE and run

Anyone seen this before. On a backup to disk we had no problems, so the DB looks like it is fine. We have also been able to backup smaller databases to tape using the same scripts successfully.
This is doing my head in ??
Any thoughts/ideas (and preferably) a solution would be great.
