Actually, it's not.

[oracle_at_aurora ~]$ sqlplus "/as sysdba"

SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on Thu Feb 5 07:36:44 2009

Connected to:
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options

SQL> if you loose the ", then the space is necessary indeed.
