Thanks for everyone's help. I ran dos2unix on the script and it fixed it. Even though I couldn't see any DOS characters, they must have been there somewhere because this fixed the problem.

Did you copy it through Windows at some point? Maybe it got DOS characters in the file? When you open it with vi on linux, check to see if it says [dos] at the bottom. If it does, then you can run dos2unix on the file to fix it.
