asm + asmlib

I'm making my way into asm land and was wondering what the general consensus is on making use of asmlib?  

Also, I'm attempting to create and asm instance through dbca but no disks are showing up regardless of what I use for the disk discover path. I have 2 unformatted disks, /dev/cciss/c1d1p1 and /dev/sda1 .  

Any quick guesses on why they aren't showing up?
