Nice to see you on oracle-l. I wondered if I'd bump into you at UKOUG but didn't :(

I'd do this by including 'ALTER SYSTEM SET LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_3=DEFER' in your startup script for the second server. or just use a different init.ora :)
