Agreed, however having listener downtime (needed for upgrade to ASM home) is as hard because it would effectiveley deny access to database. An argument can be made to support using the RDBMS Home listener during the upgrade of the ASM home... Still, I think that applying patchsets to Oracle RDBMS is a good idea, as well as applying CPUs. And any other issue where you might need to apply a patch for a certain database (one off for a bug?) would imply shutting down every instance on the home.

So to guarantee maximum availability you should separate each database in its own home (which would give most DBAs a headache, but has *certain* advantages). This means greater flexibility, but in the eventuality that you need to apply a patchset, you'd have to do it five times over.

Why not the listener from ASM home.

My reasoning is as a Operational DBA (as opposed to a application DBA in this project)i can always upgrade the ASM to the latest version in terms of patches etc and can have my listener css etc upgraded to teh latest version.

I would not be so lucky trying to wade through the beurcracry of patching the Oracle home as the databases belong to different line of Business and try to convince everybody would be tough for me
