You're not using some sort of centralized authentication mechanism, such as LDAP, NIS+, etc. are you?

Thanks for the suggestions, though that doesn't seem to be the problem.

I have seen this before, just never pursued it.

As I am building a new server, and not a test box, I would like to do it properly.

So far, no luck.

strace of groupadd didn't reveal anything either.
