Mark,

If I am not wrong, starting with 10gR2, when recover tablespace is used, RMAN automatically re-creates (media recovery) the datafiles which has no backup, as long as required archives logs and control file contains the info about those missing datafiles which has no backup. Unfortunately, Dan is on 10gR1.
