Actually the folks at IBM gave us the answer. You need the TL01 patch
which is listed only by Oracle as a requirement for Apps 11.5.

Don't know if this helps, but check SAP Note #608726. In part it states:
"When AIX loads a shared library into memory the image of that library
is kept in memory even if no process is using the library. If the ondisk
copy of the library is altered then applications using that
library
still use the in-memory copy and not the updated disk copy. This is
normal expected behaviour on AIX.
In the case of applying an Oracle Patch Set then shutting down all the
the instances , listeners and applications still leaves shared
libraries
in memory (eg: libjox9.a stays in memory). Application of the patchset
updates the disk copy, but subsequent startup of an instance uses the
in-memory library images (if they are still present). Hence the version
banner can show the old release, and upgrade steps may fail as the
instance is running an unsupported combination of libraries."
Suggestion is to run slibclean before you patch, but with what you're experiencing, it may prove beneficial to run it now.

Thanks, Saw that one already & relinked the software. Interesting note I just got. The listener worked fine when they installed the base release, but after installing all of the one off patches that SAP (Stupid A$$ Package) specified it is now failing. Would not be surprised that SAP provided them with either a buggy patch or massaged it in ways that Oracle doesn't know about. Must admit that the more of SP and SAP support that I see the less I respect them.

metalink note points to 557855.1, although for solaris it could very well be your issue. but note also says it can happen on any platform if your trace matches.
