Yes, sorry we were a bit off track - sorry to contribute to that, but I was pretty excited about the new (to me at least) undocumented parameters for dbms_xplan.

Back on track - I believe even "explain plan" is enough to create a 10053 trace, isn't it? I'd recommend trying to get that trace for both of the queries and then compare the two. I think that's the fastest way to get to the root of the problem. It seems like I've been recommending 10053 traces a lot lately - sorry, just doing my part to Battle Against Any Guess.
