You may want to have a look at the Oracle MAA papers (http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/maa.htm#Database), especially
http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/pdf/MAA_WP_10g_RACPrimarySingleInstancePhysicalStandby.pdf (the RAC part is easy to ignore)
