To be fair, I went looking for it and could not find the reversal. However, I do expect that I will come across it again someday. Meanwhile it is one of those DBA days and so only have time to pass along this quick addendum.

I agree, and if I remember right, Robert Freeman reversed them in his lastest RMAN book (10g).

Howard,  

  I find the rman parameter nomenclature confusing when duplicating a database. TARGET is the database from which you are duplicating (normally a production database in my case). AUXILIARY is the database to which you are copying (in my mind, the real target). The auxiliary must be started up in nomount mode.

I;m trying to do an RMAN duplicate database to new host so target db is in nomount mode
trouble is this gives blocked status from sqlnet. I have found stuff about dedicated connection in listener but it still doesnt seem to work.
