I'd say managing expectations is key to happiness.
For example let's say you tell your manager you can tune a query to run in 1 second, but the best you can deliver is 2 seconds. Now imagine you told you boss 5 seconds, but you delivered 3 seconds. Which scenario do you think makes your boss happier?
