oracle recommends just 2 diskgroups, one for redo/flashback and one for data

I think seperation of data (data+index) and online redo could be feasible depending on your SAN configuration.
Transactional performance is depended upon redo write actions, which are typically smal(lish) writes to the online redologfiles.

Please mind that every 'slice' given to ASM is seen as a (seperate) disk by ASM.
That is why rebalancing is taking place, to spread the IO's out even over the disks.

Most SAN's are configured in a way that slices are not seperate groups of disks, but spread among all disks in the SAN. If so, the striping has already taken place. Rebalancing in ASM means that it is being redone.

I've heard rumours of ASM failing in high volume environments.
