Good point, I would just add that this can (and probably should) be done for you automatically in 9i by enabling controlfile autobackups like this:

rman target / catalog rman/pwd_at_rcat
RMAN> CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON; For more info:
