Some time ago linux was a clear winner in CPU operations, as Windows was doing a lot of unnecessary work for system calls.

The folks in Redmond have since fixed that.

One thing not yet considered in this thread: What is the number of databases that
will be deployed on the server?

IMO multiple databases are much easier to manage on linux/unix than windows.
