There are many reasons to use a recovery catalog.

All of our databases are being backed using a recovery catalog.

bplist can be used to find the autobackup files from NetBackup, with the added bonus of getting the DBID for the database.

Using a recovery catalog makes most RMAN tasks simpler.

Oracle docs claim that everything possible with a recovery catalog is also possible using only the controlfile. There is a long list of caveats to go with that statement.
