Have found the following "interesting" cases -

  1. For cold backups; DBAs were providing a list of files to the unix team to backup and would shut down the database. The List of files wasn't updated though more datafiles were added to the database.
  2. Controlfile was not being backed up after a rman backup.
  3. While using conventional backup; After end backup command, no log switch and no archive log backup was taken.

Putting it in and knowing how to backup but not knowing how to use it to recover.

Also, I would think the "backup database" command might be misleading to most DBA's. It does not do a "switch logfiles" for you at the end of your backup. Better to use command "backup database plus archivelog [all] [delete input]". Or just know that you must "switch logfile" at the end to flush remaining transactions out of your redo log files.

Hello List,

I would like hear from you about the common mistakes by most of the DBAs do regarding the backup and recovery. I would think of the following:

  1. Never testing their backups.
  2. No good backup and recovery policies.
  3. Afraid of using RMAN or Making benefits of RMAN

I would really like to know if there are any other points than what I specified above.
