Alan,

        Thanks I'd already seen that. It basically says that Oracle won't look into any issues for this combination, it does not say that it won't work. So in the spirit of test everything I did manage to dig up a copy of Oracle 8.0.4 client out of my packrat pile (still sneezing from the dust) and tired it. Sure enough it failed, miserably just like I'd hoped it would.
