I stand corrected! Thanks Brandon! I checked the same column and spoke with our backup folks. The value stored in our database in this column is what Brandon was talking about - a "domain storage pool name" which is a disk staging area. Tivoli will move these files to tape at a later time.

Subject: RE: RMAN Tape Media Volume Identification

You can get the tape volume from rc_backup_piece.media, at least I do with Netbackup, but it may be different with other MMLs. Actually, I used to get this info back when we went straight to tape, but now our Netbackup server uses a disk staging area to facilitate the high volume of backups we run, so when RMAN writes the backup to the MML, it actually just goes to the Netbackup disk staging area and then Netbackup puts it on tape later on its own time so now we don't get the actual tape names in the media column anymore.

[mailto:oracle-l-bounce_at_freelists.org] On Behalf Of Mercadante, Thomas F (LABOR) I don't think you will find the specific tape volume information in the Rman repository. This is managed by the Media Management software.

We have need to obtain information from RMAN including the specific tape volumes on which various backupsets are written.
