Ahh, someone pointed me to this document:

But it seems a tad outdated ... quoting max RPM of 10K and drives "soon" in the 150-200gb size.

Still, it lays out the basics for SAME (stripe and mirror everything) ... and goes a long way to answering some of my questions (still digesting it to figure out if two instances changes the logic in anyway).

Anyway, armed with this and a new acronym I can dig around more on my own.
