RE: Different Oracle homes for development, test, training ... environments

We have found that in a cluster environment that you will be able to more easily do updates if you use multiple homes. We create homes and apply the patch to the new home and then migrate the databases onto the patched home at least it was good for the 10.2.0.2 to 10.2.0.3 updates.
And yes you will want asm home crs home and database home if you are running RAC

Still thinking about how to apply the patching for CPU's

I highly recommend RAC to anyone as I can see gainful employment for years whereever its installed <G>

Best practice is also to use a separate home for ASM than for your database instances if on the same box, for the very same reason of not having to upgrade/patch both if you don't want to.
