Perhaps if you described your question more clearly. Your example seems somewhat ambiguous. Can you provide more examples? Is the only difference that one has no periods, while the other has 2 (or 3?) periods.

    What do you define the difference between the two numbers in your example? 1? What would the difference be defined if the difference occurred in another column? 100 or 1.0.0? Is difference the only mathematical calculation that is needed? No multiplication, exponentiation?

    Maybe if you explained the application it would help. Do you work for a library and these are Dewey Decimal numbers?

   Which database version are you on? 10g where regular expressions are available?
